JD is an inclusive and compassionate therapist who works with clients ranging from young adults to elders navigating the effects of trauma, grief and loss, and identity exploration. His strength-based approach is complemented by his friendly, positive, and energetic demeanor, which clients find both comforting and motivating. Additionally he is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
EMDR has proven helpful for people suffering from traumas. When a disturbing event occurs it can get locked in the brain with the original images, feelings, thoughts, and body sensations. This can lead to problems when the brain links present experiences to past disturbing memories. EMDR can help reprocess past memories and activate your brain’s natural healing process.
As a member of the LGBTQIA community, JD brings a personal understanding of how identity trauma can impact functioning. This lived experience is a cornerstone of his work, allowing him to connect with clients on a deeper level. JD has extensive experience supporting clients in non-traditional relationship structures.
Before becoming a therapist, JD worked in architecture for 15 years. This background informs his therapeutic style, where he applies logic and strategic thinking to help clients identify the sources of their issues and build new, yet tangible, healthier ways of engaging with themselves and the world.
JD received his Masters of Counseling Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and holds a Masters of Architecture of Illinois Institute of Technology.
Outside of his therapeutic practice, you can find JD reading and debating about Sci-Fi and fantasy books, spending time outdoors hiking, sketching, playing board and video games, and spending time with his partner and their dog.
